Are You Moving Overseas?
If you are planning on moving overseas, one of the biggest elements to organise will be shipping. When moving abroad, shipping furniture and other belongings to your new country of residence will always be a big job (as with any moving house). Importantly, though, problems can be avoided with planning.
What are some of the most important things to consider?
First of all, you have made the decision to move. This could be for a number of reasons:
- Career move. You’ve been offered a great job opportunity in another country.
- Family move. Moving close to (or away from) family.
- Returning to your country of birth. You’ve had your fund and it’s time to go home.
- Not moving, but sending household items to friends or family who live overseas.
No matter the reason you want to send your household items, a major consideration should always be the timing of any cargo move. You will want your possessions to arrive at your end destination at a time of your choosing. Understanding the shipping process and planning ahead can have a big impact.
How long does moving belongings overseas take?
The first questions to ask yourself is; when do I need my items to be there?
All too often, we see people miscalculate the time it will take for items to reach their country of destination via international shipping. And this can have some profound effects on the costs involved. You may need to temporarily rent furniture or equipment. You may not have access to clothing or personal items you need until they finally arrive. On the other hand, you don’t necessarily want your possessions to arrive too early and you pay for additional storage time.
It is extremely important that as part of any consideration into moving abroad that you should consider your timing.
- How long it will take to pack? Inevitably, it will take longer than you expect.
- How long will the shipping take? There are many sea freight shipping routes with many options.
- Will there be factors at the other end that need to be taken into consideration? Customs other factors will vary from country to country.
Whilst there will always be timing variations with international shipping, the more planning done upfront, the better your options and costs will be. This can be things such as learning how to pack a container for overseas shipping, or familiarising yourself with the many aspects of freight shipping. As freight specialists, this is where we can help.
Ocean freight shipping times from Australia
The more time you have to arrange shipping, the better your options. Advance planning allows you to access more shipping opportunities with potentially better pricing. You can choose the shipping option most compatible with your requirements rather than needing to take an option because it is the last one.
From Australia, there are not direct shipping options to every other country in the world. Additionally, shipping services from the West Coast are not the same as from the East Coast of Australia.
For example, there are no direct services from Fremantle to any Pacific Islands or across The Pacific. Nor are there (at the time of writing this), any direct shipping from anywhere in Australia, to anywhere in South Africa. It always pays to check because what you want may not necessarily be available in reality.
