Self-Pack Shipping Containers for Moving Overseas from Australia

If you’re moving overseas from Australia and looking for a new home, you’re more than likely going to be relocating a lot of your possessions. This article will outline the main differences between using self-pack shipping containers vs a professional moving company.

Preparing to move overseas

Relocating or moving overseas is a big change. One of the first things that you’ll need to consider is how many of your belongings you are going to take with you. Many people choose to use a self-pack shipping container when they move overseas because it can be affordable and convenient. There are some things that you need to know, however, that might help you decide if it’s right for you or if other options are better suited to your situation.

Because they allow you to load all of your belongings directly into the shipping container, self-pack containers can be incredibly convenient and cost-effective. The packing process can take place over multiple days or even weeks, giving you much more flexibility. Furthermore, you have full control over the packing process without worrying about possible loss or damage by removalists.

The main downside to using a self-pack shipping container is almost the same; you are responsible for loading and unloading the container yourself. As anyone who has moved house before will know; this can be quite a lot of work. The shipping container self pack method also means self unpack!

Professional moving companies, on the other hand, will come in and take control of the entire process. Of course, this comes at a considerable cost. If you are on a budget, or just want to save yourself expense, the self-pack container is the way to go.

Invest in the right self-pack moving overseas shipping container

When moving a family, the sheer size and weight of most furniture and appliances can be overwhelming. Choosing the right container is important for getting your belongings to their new destination in prime condition.

First of all – the size. The majority of shipping containers come in 20-foot and 40-foot sizes. These are designed to match the trucks, ships, cranes, and other infrastructure of international freight shipping. A 20-ft shipping container is typically large enough to fit the contents of a standard 3 bedroom house. There are more unusual container sizes. If you want to know more, read our article on shipping container sizes and types.

The most important thing to watch for when purchasing a moving overseas shipping container is the condition of the container. Older containers, if they have sustained too many impacts during their lifetime, may no longer be weatherproof or seaworthy. The last thing you want is to turn up at your new home and open a container full of mouldy or water-damaged belongings. This is also one of the reasons we recommend marine freight insurance.

If you are not certain, don’t worry. At SPLS we can help you purchase a suitable container and arrange the freight to your destination.

How to pack a container for overseas

As with any form of moving, it is important to properly pack your belongings to prevent damage during transport. This is perhaps even more necessary for moving overseas shipping due to the length of the voyage and any ship motion due to weather along the way. Additionally, boxes and items added to the container need to be stacked or secured so that they don’t shift in transit.

Lastly, everything should be well-labeled to facilitate unpacking at the other end of the journey. We always recommend having a last on/first off box that contains the essentials you want to access quickly.

If you’re not sure where to start, we have a number of articles with excellent packing tips and guidelines.

Final Word

Moving overseas is a big undertaking, but with the right planning and execution, it can be a relatively smooth process.

Should You Buy Your Own Cargo Container For International Relocation?

In some cases, purchasing a shipping container or cargo container for moving overseas can be a viable option.

Normally when goods are shipping overseas (commercial or otherwise) a temporary container provided by the shipping line would be used. With these, you will have a limited amount of time following delivery to return the container clean and empty. Generally, the time is around 10 days before you start to incur container detention charges (known as demurrage fees). These are charged daily and are quite expensive.

Hopefully, with your move, you will have accommodation waiting for you at the other end. If you can unpack the cargo container quickly and get it returned to the shipping line, a temporary container will suffice. Check our article on packing your household goods for some tips on getting them into the container.

If a fast turnaround is doubtful, purchasing a shipping container may be the way to go. It can be used for your personal storage at your destination, and there will be no time restrictions. We can help you to purchase a suitable container and arrange shipping.

Cargo container compliance

There are a number of factors to be aware of when moving overseas and arranging international shipping;

  • All cargo containers shipped globally must have a current compliance plate. This is a little like registration plate for a car. The shipping container compliance plate is similarly attached to the outside of the container.
  • Non-plated containers cannot be legally shipped.
  • Your shipping container should be wind and watertight. The roof is the most important; even a pinhole or rusted area can lead to water ingress. This, in turn, can lead to unwanted and unnecessary cargo damage, and may actually void any cargo insurance.

Our guide to buying shipping containers also has further information on choices, requirements and pricing.

Container storage at destination

If your container is going to sit for some time in a storage depot or yard, a few quick checks can save heartbreak.

  • Consider the prevailing weather conditions with how and where your container will be stored.
  • Try not to leave the container sitting directly on the ground. Whilst it may take some time, groundwater damage can eventually occur. You don’t want this to cause damage to your valuable possession.
  • Of course, ensure that any cargo inside the container is secured properly and the container is locked.
  • Consider what access you will have to the storage site. When and how will you be able to access your container?

Purchasing a cargo container for moving overseas

The cost to purchase a cargo container depends on a combination of several factors. Containers are sold based upon supply and demand availability and a generally paid for in US dollars. This means the current US exchange rate will need to be taken into account. Additionally, the quality of the container has a considerable effect on price.

If purchasing a shipping container is only a temporary requirement, you can resell the container once you are unpacked. Alternatively, you can reuse the same container again if you are planning another move. Of course, you would need to check the compliance plates were still valid.

We can arrange to purchase a new or second-hand shipping container and compliance plates on your behalf. Please call or contact us for more information.

Shipping your personal effects when moving to Egypt.

If you are moving to Egypt, a self-pack shipping container service may be an affordable and viable option. This can provide much greater flexibility and ease the stress of your relocation, however, there are still numerous factors to consider.

Challenges of shipping to Egypt

You need to check any and all requirements for shipping to Egypt. We have been advised of different Customs and import requirements in some ports. Self-pack container services can be booked to arrive at Alexandria, Damietta, Port Said and Sokhna.

With regard to the freight companies, not every shipping line calls at every port. It is imperative that you know exactly where you want your container to go. This way we can provide the correct container and advice to ensure your goods arrive at their intended destination.

It is imperative that you decide if you have a residence to move into immediately. Consider whether you will need to store the items for any amount of time.

All shipping lines only give us about 18 days free time for their container from when we pick this up until when we return it to the port. Whilst the shipping is weekly, the vessels only receive on specific days; so please check with us for the free days before you just get a container.

All shipping lines only give us a limited amount of time (usually 10 days from availablity) to return their container to the nominated depot at destination. After that, they start charging rather large amounts for container detention (known as demurrage fees). The argument for the shipping lines is that they could use the container for other shipments.

The alternative is to purchase your own seaworthy and plated shipping container which you can keep for an extended loading period. Because you own the container you do not have to return it within any time period. The container can be used for extended periods of storage for these or other items, and may be sold at a later stage.

Transportation times to Egypt

The transit time is about 7 weeks, so you need to make your departure and arrival plans to suit.

You will need someone at destination to act on your behalf. You will need to appoint someone before you arrange any shipping, and we need to know their contact details.

There may be some documentation you will need to complete on arrival, but this is not onerous. Essentially the process at destination is the reverse of what happens here. Your appointed agent will make sure your goods are handled efficiently and with a minimum of fuss.

SPLS Freight Forwarding and Self-Pack Container Services

We now offer self-pack container services that ship to ports in Alexandria, Damietta, Port Said and Sokhna. Unfortunately our infrastructure and services do not allow us to provide any transportation services within Egypt. Additional transportation can be arranged by your nominated agent, however.

We can guide you through the process of purchasing a shipping container, and work out an individual plan and schedule to fully support your relocation. Contact us for more information.

What are the best ways to pack for moving overseas?

If you are moving overseas, there are so many resources these days which enable you to hire people to pack up your goods. Of course, this can be quite an expensive option. The alternative is that you can do the packing yourself.

Whilst this will be a personal choice, I would add that getting the correct supplies is a relatively easy thing to do. Items such as shrink wrap, tape, boxes and lots and lots of bubblewrap can easily be found on eBay or via a quick search of the internet.

The important thing is that your precious goods are well protected on their journey. Really spend some time and educate yourself on how to pack your goods safely and properly. Remember that at sea cargo ships can often encounter up to 20 metre swells. If not packed properly, your belongings can shift inside the shipping container. Your goods must be packed well and secured well in the container to avoid damage.

Another element we like to highlight is the importance of cargo insurance. Whilst packing goods properly will help avoid damage in most circumstances, there are occasionally exceptional situations where damage may still occur. Extreme weather by its nature is unpredictable and can cause damage to a ship and its cargo. Cargo insurance can also help cover unforeseen costs should anything unexpected happen, such as delays, strike action at ports or any other event.

Having said that, we’ll come back to the packing side of things

Some simple and basic packing tips to begin.

We’ve put together the following list that we believe cover most of the essentials for packing up a household for relocation.

  1. Decide if you want to pack your own goods or hire someone else to do it. This will typically be a time vs cost decision.
  2. Work out exactly what pieces you will take with you and which pieces you will sell or give away. Depending upon the size of your household you will need to consider shipping container volume.
  3. Buy your packing materials and supplies if you are doing it yourself.
  4. Ensure that you give yourself enough lead time to properly pack up all your belongings.
  5. Create a packing list of everything you have packed and are taking. This is not only for your own use, but also for Customs at the destination end. Take pictures of goods if necessary.
  6. Label all boxes. This will be of immense help to you at the other end.
  7. If you are using a removalist to transload your goods from your house into the container at the bond store, check with us when you need to book them so everything runs smoothly. Ask if you can accompany the removalists or meet them at the bond store. This way you can oversee the loading of the shipping container.
  8. Alternatively, you may have elected to have the container dropped onto your land or have a truck and the container wait outside your property while you load it. Ensure that you have plenty of people to help you pack and secure your goods within the container. You will need to buy straps and use blankets to help buffer the movement within the container. Keep in mind those 20 metre swells at sea.
  9. Check that you have transit insurance (either yours or the removalist) – this will insure you goods while they are being transported from your home to the bond store or wharf.
  10. This last step is important if you are packing a container at your place of residence. When the container has been locked and sealed, record and send us a the seal number. We will need this for your documentation. Additionally or alternatively, take a photo of the seal and seal number and send us that also.

Removalists

Check out your classified ads in your local paper. Prices can vary widely. Ensure that they understand they are delivering your goods to a bond store and packing your container for you. Ask if they can provide any strapping necessary to tie down any heavier goods within the container.

Do a local internet search for ‘removalists’, ‘household removals’

If you are moving from interstate. This is the easiest and most cost effective option for you. You pack the goods and the removalist loads your goods – drives to the bond store and packs your container for you. We can notify the bond store re the arrival of the removalist and so on.

Planning is crucial at this stage so that everything runs smoothly, and there are no extra costs incurred due to hold ups or bad planning.

Overseas Moving Insurance

We always recommend that you insure your shipment(s). To do this effectively you need to consider the value of the goods, the cost of the overseas moving insurance, the risk involved, and any excess charges or restrictions that might apply.

For household and personal effects, there are several important factors to consider:

How well are the goods packed?

If you pack any furniture and/or white goods, then wherever possible, you should repack the goods into their original packaging before adding to the moving containers. If you are like most people, however, you won’t have kept any of that. You’ll need to consider how best to package anything you wish to send.

For packing, you should always have a good supply of cartons for things like kitchenware, clothes and books. Mark all cartons with a general description of what they contain. This is especially if the goods are checked or inspected at the destination, however, it is also beneficial for your own personal uses.

You should also have a good supply of bubble wrap, packing tape, packaging materials, blankets, sheets and so on. Anything that needs packing should receive your best attention and efforts to ensure that it is effectively protected from harm during transport.

This would be for all furniture and white goods. All items need excessive packing and protection. Your furniture and other valuable items can be well protected from similar items with sheets and blankets.

Packing your own container vs professional removalists

Bear in mind that however, if you are using your own self-pack moving containers, all of your items must be tightly secured. Containers have a number of “tie-down” points for you to secure your furniture and other items, but you should use additional padding. You will need your own blankets, sheets, pillows, and the like for added protection. These will help protect your items from any movement or rubbing other items, or even from movement within the container.

Remember that vessels will encounter storms and rough seas, and swells of up to 20 meters are not uncommon. The goods inside a container on board a vessel that encounters such swells will be subject to severe stress and movement. It is imperative that all items are tightly packed and secured to prevent damage.

If you use a professional service to remove the goods from your house, they will bring the goods to our nominated container depots in each main port city. These professionals then transload the items from their van into the container for shipping.

Whilst a removalist may use their own blankets and the like for the domestic movement, they will not use this same packaging for export (they will not get their blankets back). For overseas removals, it is imperative that you provide enough blankets, sheets, pillows and the like for these to be used when packing your container. It may be possible to purchase these from the removalists.

Insurance for moving overseas

You then have to decide whether or not you want to go to the expense of insuring your goods. This is highly recommended.

The main advantage to overseas moving insurance (marine shipping insurance) is peace of mind – you can sleep at night knowing that your precious possessions are covered. To do this effectively, however, you need to consider the “fair value” of your items.

Consider that if you had a total loss, how much would it cost you to replace the goods? It can sometimes be difficult to estimate the worth of your possessions, and it is very common for people to underestimate them.

  • Some items may be sentimental, or even some furniture “irreplaceable”, but for these items, you need to be practical.
  • It is easy to underestimate everyday items such as clothing. How much would it cost to replace all your clothes?

For unique or special items it can be valuable to get a formal valuation. You should keep a copy of this handy just in case.

Insurance claims

In general, insurance companies will not pay you just any old amount. If you have packed goods yourself they may offer limited cover for surface damage that may or may not have occurred in transit. You may also incur higher insurance premiums for self-packed goods which is important to balance against the savings made from self-packing.

Alternatively, if you use a professional removalist service from your house until the goods are secured into your container, you may get extended cover. You will need to be able to provide a receipt for their services. You may be able to claim insurance for professionally handled and packed goods. This will cover you from door to door including total loss of the container. This will provide better insurance coverage and potentially better premiums, however, at the added cost of the professional removalists.

Insurance is NOT included in our services automatically unless specifically requested and paid for. Whilst the cost of sending shipping containers overseas may seem considerable (and has been getting more expensive), it is your precious goods that are worth covering.

There are many parties involved in international shipping and many variables during transportation. It is generally not possible to determine exactly how or where damage may have occurred. As such, any and all claims will ONLY be assessed and settled by a formal insurance company. Whilst we will always treat your possessions with respect, we cannot accept complaints about damage. Much of the transportation is out of our direct control which is why we recommend cargo insurance.

We can provide insurance coverage if requested, but generally it is better value for you to arrange this as a separate cover. Whilst we recommend insurance for your goods, we don’t specifically recommend any particular insurer. You should always seek advice separately and ensure that any insurance covers your requirements specifically.

Speak with us for assistance with all aspects of your overseas move, from shipping container purchase to overseas freight shipping. We are here to help.

Are you moving overseas?

Moving house can be a challenge when it’s around the corner to the next street. Moving overseas is an even larger challenge, especially if you’ve not done this before or you have no support.

In these circumstances, the big question is “how do I do this, and what are my options and costs?”

Using a freight forwarder for moving overseas

A freight forwarding service can be a massive boon. The knowledge and experience with overseas shipping processes can save you time, money and (worst case scenario) the loss of your precious belongings.

When you know you’ll be moving overseas, to begin with you need to decide exactly what it is you want to happen (or at least the locations and potential timing). At that point you can give us a call to talk about the how and when, and the costs involved.

Our freight forwarding services are best for anyone who is paying for this themselves, and does not mind doing a little bit of the work themselves. This is ideal for anyone (or a family) who wants to move their whole, or major part of their household to another country.

As freight forwarders based in Australia, we can only send a shipping container to the port at your intended destination. We do not have facilities to handle any customs issues at the destination, or any door deliveries. Consider that you need to have a representative at the other end to act on your behalf and more or less do the reverse of what happens here.

The shipping options for moving overseas

So, presuming the decision to move overseas has been made, there are three basic options for you:

  1. Leasing a self pack shipping container and loading from your own home.
  2. Using a leased container that is packed at our depot.
  3. Purchasing your own shipping container.

Self Pack Containers

Probably the best and cheapest option for you is to pack the container from your home yourself, although it comes with potential difficulties.

There are some rules and regulations that may or may not allow you to do this (these will be covered as a separate notation), but presuming you can do this, then this is always the cheapest and best option for you.

The shipping line will provide us with a container. We can then deliver the container to you at your chosen address. You pack the container and then we pick up the full container and deliver this to the vessel for shipping.

Just consider that if you pack the container yourself, the walls of the container form part of the packing for your items. Inside the container there are a number of tie down points on the walls and floor.

You need to make sure that all of your items are secured and protected. Bear in mind that the vessels may encounter 20 meter swells. You do not want the contents of your container moving around or ending up as matchwood by the other end.

It will be your responsibility to provide all of the packing and securing for your belonging. Things such as extra packing blankets, ropes and the like are vital.

Container Packed At Our Depot

Similar to above, except that you arrange a removalist to take the goods from your home to our container depot. The removalist then transloads the goods from their vehicle into the container for shipping.

We would arrange to have the container at our nominated depot in the metropolitan area. We then take the shipping container to the port for freighting after your removalist has packed it.

This can be an extremely good option for anyone who either cannot or does not want to pack their own container. This is also a great option for anyone outside of the metropolitan area who is looking to relocate overseas.

Bear in mind, that if you choose this option, then it will be your responsibility to provide the removalist with blankets and other items to secure the goods. The removalist will not provide these items as they are they will not get them back. This is always a good way to use your own blankets and linen – just requires a wash or disposal afterwards.

Buying Your Own Shipping Container

Purchase your own shipping container can be a viable option. In combines with either option above in that you can pack the container at your home or at our depot. The only difference is that you have purchased your own container (or we can do it for you). This means that you will not need to be concerned with the container leasing timeframes required by the shipping lines (as noted in the next section).

Buying a shipping container may be a good option if you do not know what accommodation you have at the other end. It is also extremely useful if you will likely need extra storage.

Purchasing a shipping container will cost you more up front, however, there is peace of mind. You’ll have additional time and flexibility and then be able to sell the container once you have finished with it. Just consider that there are a few compliance issues you will have to deal with, however. It is not as simple as just going out and purchasing or shipping any old container.

The Shipping Line rules to be aware of when leasing a container

However you do this, we will arrange the shipping to the port of the country to where you are going.

All the charges up to this point are prepaid. The destination port and shipping line charges can be paid here or there, whichever your preference. What we cannot control is what happens after that.

Also consider that when leasing a shipping container, the shipping lines usually only allow 3 free days at the destination port before there will be port demurrage charges. At the other end the shipping lines typically allow about 10 free days from the date of the vessel arrival until the requested return of the container. After that they’ll charge you container detention (demurrage) fees.

What this means is that you don’t have unlimited time to use a container leased from a shipping line. You must pack and unpack the container within the provided timeframes in order to avoid additional costs and fees.

Additionally, in many cases the shipping line will actually ask you for a substantial deposit for the container to enable you to remove this from the port. You would then claim back after you have returned the empty container.

Are You Moving Overseas?

If you are planning on moving overseas, one of the biggest elements to organise will be shipping. When moving abroad, shipping furniture and other belongings to your new country of residence will always be a big job (as with any moving house). Importantly, though, problems can be avoided with planning.

What are some of the most important things to consider?

First of all, you have made the decision to move. This could be for a number of reasons:

  • Career move. You’ve been offered a great job opportunity in another country.
  • Family move. Moving close to (or away from) family.
  • Returning to your country of birth. You’ve had your fund and it’s time to go home.
  • Not moving, but sending household items to friends or family who live overseas.

No matter the reason you want to send your household items, a major consideration should always be the timing of any cargo move. You will want your possessions to arrive at your end destination at a time of your choosing. Understanding the shipping process and planning ahead can have a big impact.

How long does moving belongings overseas take?

The first questions to ask yourself is; when do I need my items to be there?

All too often, we see people miscalculate the time it will take for items to reach their country of destination via international shipping. And this can have some profound effects on the costs involved. You may need to temporarily rent furniture or equipment. You may not have access to clothing or personal items you need until they finally arrive. On the other hand, you don’t necessarily want your possessions to arrive too early and you pay for additional storage time.

It is extremely important that as part of any consideration into moving abroad that you should consider your timing.

  • How long it will take to pack? Inevitably, it will take longer than you expect.
  • How long will the shipping take? There are many sea freight shipping routes with many options.
  • Will there be factors at the other end that need to be taken into consideration? Customs other factors will vary from country to country.

Whilst there will always be timing variations with international shipping, the more planning done upfront, the better your options and costs will be. This can be things such as learning how to pack a container for overseas shipping, or familiarising yourself with the many aspects of freight shipping. As freight specialists, this is where we can help.

Ocean freight shipping times from Australia

The more time you have to arrange shipping, the better your options. Advance planning allows you to access more shipping opportunities with potentially better pricing. You can choose the shipping option most compatible with your requirements rather than needing to take an option because it is the last one.

From Australia, there are not direct shipping options to every other country in the world. Additionally, shipping services from the West Coast are not the same as from the East Coast of Australia.

For example, there are no direct services from Fremantle to any Pacific Islands or across The Pacific. Nor are there (at the time of writing this), any direct shipping from anywhere in Australia, to anywhere in South Africa. It always pays to check because what you want may not necessarily be available in reality.

We at SPLS are freight specialists with many years of experience in freight logistics and shipping. Come and speak with us when you first consider moving once you know where you will be travelling to. We can help work out your best options and provide some moving overseas shipping costs. That way you won’t be caught unprepared.

There is always a misconception about what you can do and when you can do this.

If we are to bring a container to you for you to load, then there are certain rules we have to adhere to.

Firstly, if we are to bring a container to you by sideloader and place this on the ground, then it MUST be on private property.

A sideloader will discharge to the right hand side of the truck. There MUST be hardstand for both the truck and the container. You would need about 30′ of space for the truck and the container, and there MUST NOT be any overhead wires.

Secondly, we CANNOT drop a container on council land (median strips, roads etc) unless you have a permit from your local council and you send a copy to us beforehand.

Unfortunately there are all sorts of compliance, insurance and other legal requirements that prevent us from doing this otherwise.

Thirdly, we can bring a container on the back of a truck to you, and park on the street or in your drive. The main issue for you is that this container is about a meter off the ground. we would only have the driver – no extra labour. You would have to provide all other labour and services. Not only that, the truck and driver would charge you per hour. and if you wanted a Saturday or Sunday, you will have penalty rates to pay.

Or, you can arrange for a removalist to load out of your house, and transload the goods into a container at our nominated container depot. You could bring any vehicles or boats and so on directly to the depot yourself for the removalists to load, or we could load and secure your vehicle into the container at cost firstly if required.

Please discuss this matter with us, and we will advise you of your options and how best for you to do this.

In general, vehicles can be shipped as part of your personal items.

You should get any cars, motor bikes, push bikes, boats, trailers and the like steam cleaned before shipping.

You will also need to drain these items of all fuel, and disconnect any batteries (these are international shipping requirements); and you should also place sufficient cartons or other items underneath any vehicles and the like just in case of any oil leaks.

If we used a shipping line container, then you are responsible for all costs to clean the container after use.

So, any oil spills/stains you would pay for.

You should be able to pack items inside your motor vehicle.

Please make sure that any vehicles are tightly secured inside the container to prevent any movement and damage to the vehicles themselves, and any other cargo in the container.
